The 21st Century Trainer

If trainers are change agents for organizations, they must first focus on change in training teams and individually.  Training organizations must continually articulate their vision for the actual training function.  This vision should include informational and communications infrastructure, proposed and predicted changes, and continuous focus on just-in-time, just-enough (JITJE) learning.

Trainers, which will be in ever-growing demand in the future, need to begin now balancing (not juggling!) their priorities.  If you have a God first, family second, and work third priority list, or if you have a work first, everything else second priority list, or any other personal priority list, getting those priorities in order and balanced NOW is your actual priority.  Otherwise we might feel like frogs being boiled about a decade from now when we’re in high, high demand.

The 21st century trainer will be one of the most exciting roles and I for one can not wait to see what happens in our industry in the next few years and decades.

I like that analogy “…feel like frogs being boiled…” Businesses definitely need to start putting things in order, otherwise, they will be so far behind that “catch-up” won’t even be able to catch-up. Trainers needs to step up their game and honestly prepare for a whirlwind.

Just I learned a new position at work (accounting), and received the wrong type of training due to a lack of communication and preparation. It has caused some serious setbacks. Somehow that “just in time” training took a flight.

I agree…that was a very good analogy! Training is a vital thing in any business. You can’t succeed or do your best when you have not had the full training that would lead to increased performane at your full potential.

This chapter was a little hard for me to follow. I thought I was reading something of a “real” scenario, and I wasn’t. I don’t doubt that some organizations have CEO’s and upper management with this type of technology, but in the real world, the front line managers don’t have life that easy. We have stickey notes, clip boards and paper trays with to-do marked on them. It would be nice if our technology would actually do that much work for us, but it doesn’t. So, that being said, I think that we should definately keep up with the times and changing technologies. New technology will help us make our jobs easier in the future.

I agree that training organizations should keep a close eye on vision and changes. This is great stuff.
From the factory experience I have management has no consideration of the ROI, simply the daily production numbers.
If I were in charge, training would be my #1 priority, we might get off to a slow start, but similar to college students, they do to.
Well trained employees will do better the same as students delaying their work until after college.

It is vital for companies to move forward in todays fast growing technology based world. I have done many different jobs and I know how much more work I could have gotten done had the technology been better. I think it takes more time with the old ways and people are expected to do more now days so companies should be expected to keep up technology.

Companies and businesses need to be constantly upgrading training due to technology and it being ever changing. All types of technology are constantly being upgraded with new software or new programs and if companies expect to stay on top they need to keep up.
